A. P. Lyashko read out the greetings of the Council of Ministers of the USSR to the VIII Congress of the Geographical Society. The plenary sessions were devoted to three topical issues of geographical science, scientific and practical tasks of Soviet geography, and problems of the World Ocean. The plenary sessions began with a report by V. S. Zhekulin, E. S. Korotkevich, and S. B. Lavrov on "Actual and promising tasks of Soviet geography." It summarizes the results of the work of geographers over the past five years since the Seventh Congress. Geographers have worked hard in the field of theory and methodology of science and its application in practice, actively participated in comprehensive territorial programs, solving environmental management problems, and environmental education. The increased role of geography in the struggle for peace and the prevention of nuclear war was noted.
Over the past five years, geographers have actively participated in the implementation of Energy and Food programs of the USSR, such comprehensive territorial programs as Siberia, Non-Chernozemye, and the development of the BAMA zone. A group of geographers led by V. V. Vorobyov, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Director of the Institute of Geography of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was awarded medals established in connection with the construction of BAM.
The traditions of the society include close ties with the Navy. The speech of honorary member S. G. Gorshkov was devoted to this topic.
Recently, the study of anthropogenic influence on individual components of nature and on the environment as a whole has become an urgent task of geography.
